The department conducted a 2-day workshop for school teachers on 7th and 8th october 2005. The focus of the workshop was on "Being an effictive Chemistry Teacher". The workshop covered discussions on the revised plus 2 syllabus. Nearly 90 teachers from schools in and around Madurai participated.
 
New course to be introduced 2008-2009 onwards:


B.Sc. (Spl.) Chemistry with Cheminformatics: The Department of Chemistry has redesigned its UG curriculum by including four special papers related to Cheminformatics from semester III onwards related to Cheminformatics with the hope that this will provide the learner appropriate learning experience and better employability.

Eligibility : Any HSC student from any science group

 
Highlights of the Chemistry program :


UG : Study of Molecular Spectroscopy, Quantum Mechanics, Group Theory, Statistical Thermodynamics, Co-ordination chemistry. Viva-voce for all lab courses.

Research methodology and independent project work. (collaboration with agencies like Forensic Lab as and when needed.)

PG : Chemical Informatics, Polymer Chemistry, Research methodology with use of Computers – Intensive project work for one semester in institutes like CLRI, IGCAR (Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research), Kalpakkam, Chennai, National Centre for Ultrafast process, Tharamani Campus, University of Madras, Chennai, CECRI, Karakudi, Energy dept, MKU, Madurai & Syngene , Bangalore.

Training for students for writing competitive exams like CSRI, NET/SLET, & GATE, Comprehensive viva.

Self Learning Courses under CBCS :
Industrial Chemistry, Geochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Forensic Science.

  • S. Mahalakshmi of 2002-2005 batch was selected for and successfully completed a summer research fellowship at JNU Bangalore.
  • N.C. Uma - II M.Sc. selected for and successfully completed a summer research fellowship at RRL Trivandrum.
  • Ms. Mary Minita of III UG attended a 6-week Service Learning Program at ICU Japan May-June 2006.
  • Ms. S. Vijayalakshi III UG has been selected to attend a 3-week program at Oberlin College, USA on Environmental Program - January 2007.
  • Ms. S.Mathiya of II M.Sc. Chemistry successfully completed Summer Research Fellowship during May/June 2007 at Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore
  • Ms. P. Priyadarshini of III UG successfully completed Summer Research Fellowship during May/June 2007 at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore.

    Staff Achievement :

  • Dr. Mrs. A.Mercy Pushpalatha - Currently working on a minor Research project awarded by UGC.
  • Dr. Mrs. V. Sridevi was awarded a summer research project sponsored by Indian Academy of Sciences - May-June 2005; Has completed a minor research project awarded by UGC.
  • Mrs.Geetha Sivasubramanian has been awarded Ph.D in 2007.

    The department has been making and supplying chalk crayons to the college for the
    past 15 years.
